CBCP STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE OF FR. GIUSEPPE PIERANTONI, SCJ Fr. Giuseppe Pierantoni, SCJ, an Italian missionary priest kidnapped by armed men in his parish, Our Lady of Fatima, in Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur, last October 17, 2001, was
released last April 8. The following is the statement of the CBCP on his release, issued by Msgr. Hernando M. Coronel, CBCP secretary general and spokesperson. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines
(CBCP) expresses its elation that Fr. Giuseppe Pierantoni, SCJ, has finally been released after so many trying months in captivity. We join his congregation, the Priests of the Sacred Heart, in this intense feeling of
relief as we have prayed hard for this moment of his safe return. The Bishops thank the Almighty Triune God for this much-awaited occasion. We continue to pray for the captors of Father Pierantoni. We
express our deep concern over the situation of precarious and precious peace in Mindanao. Many Church people -- clergy, religious and lay -- have sacrificed and given up so much, some even their lives, to attain
that elusive peace in that region. |
