CBCP backs anti-jueteng campaign

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) threw its support behind the anti illegal gambling campaign of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jose Lina, which caused the recent relief of seven high-ranking police officials for their failure to curb jueteng in their jurisdictions.

CBCP President Archbishop Orlando B. Quevedo, O.M.I. said "the government needs to go after the big fishes and their protectors in its anti-jueteng campaign."

Msgr. Hernando M. Coronel, CBCP spokesperson, for his part, said "The goal of eliminating jueteng is most laudable. The task may be gargantuan, but not impossible, if there is real resolve and political will."
